Sugaring: Lessons from maple tree

Excerpt: “I started to panic. This wasn’t right at all. This was too much sap, and the color was all wrong. How could the tree be giving this much and still survive? Maybe this was normal? I decided to taste the sap as a scrambled to grab a bucket. “Aaaaah! That’s so bitter!” No no no no! This is bad! What could I do?! Wait…was the tree…shriveling?!”

Here I write about my journey to be in better relations with other species and spaces, primarily through the lens of food.

Okay, let me explain…I’m not a Richard Dawkins atheist because that guy’s an asshole. Christianity has meant a lot to me over the years, but since I turn 18, it’s not been how I’ve made sense of the world, the supernatural, or a concept of what, if anything, lies beyond this life. Gospel music still moves me (cuz how could it not) and the Black church remains an essential institution that I’m very thankful exists. This blog isn’t about trying to prove people wrong, it’s a space where me and two other Black men talk about what it means to be Black and not have Christianity (or other dominant religions) at the center of how we make sense of the world. There are more of us out here than you might think, and hopefully, no matter what your levels or types of beliefs, you’ll get something valuable from what we’re thinking through. Cheers.
